Expungement of Juvenile Records

Did you know that you can expunge your entire record of juvenile adjudications of delinquency? You may be eligible if you meet any of the following conditions:

  • Three years have passed since you were discharged from legal custody or supervision (or any court order of delinquency not involving custody or supervision).
  • You were not convicted of/adjudicated:
    • A crime,
    • Disorderly persons offense,
    • Petty disorderly persons offense,
    • Delinquent/in need of supervision during the three-year period before filing your petition, and there is no such pending complaint against you.
  • You were never declared a juvenile delinquent based on an act that, if committed by an adult, would be classified as a “non-expungeable” crime (such as murder, robbery, sexual assault, certain drug sale offenses).
  • You never had an adult conviction expunged.
  • You never had indictable adult criminal charges dismissed after completing a supervisory treatment/other diversion program, such as PTI.

If you are eligible, you will need to file a petition with the court and follow other procedural steps.

If eligible, you may file a petition for expungement online using the free eCourts Expungement System. There is no filing fee. To do so, you will need to register an account with an active email address and have your criminal records, including your docket number available.

To access the portal, go to the NJ Courts Expungement Self-Help Page and launch the electronic filing system as a self-represented user.

Further guidance is available on the NJ Courts Expungement Self-Help Page.
