Fresh Food Access This Summer for Those Who Qualify

The New Jersey Department of Health’s WIC Office oversees two farmers market programs: the WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) and the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP).  The senior program serves eligible individuals age 60 or older.  The WIC program serves WIC-eligible pregnant women, new mothers, and children under age 4.

WIC Farmers Market

• The WIC FMNP works with farmers to provide unprepared, locally grown fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs for the nutritional health of New Jersey’s women, infants, and children.  WIC participants can use Farmers Market Checks to buy locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables at eligible farmers markets, but cannot use them at grocery stores or other retailers.
• Eligible families can receive $20 per month in Farmers Market Checks.  Participants receive their FMNP checks during regular visits to their local WIC agency.  Ask about it during your next visit.

Senior Farmers Market

The Senior Program helps seniors afford fresh food from local farmers markets. Eligible seniors age 60 or older receive a voucher for participating farmers markets. Contact your county office on aging for more information.

Income Eligibility

To be eligible for FMNP or SFMNP, you must be at or below 185% of the federal poverty level. Find out if you qualify by checking the online FPL chart at the New Jersey Department of Health's Farmers Markets Nutrition Programs—General Information page.

All SNAP recipients can use their Families First SNAP card at approved Farmer’s Markets across New Jersey.
